Council Fellows Industry Immersion at MedStar Institute

On the final morning of our D.C. Delegation, participants in NHCC’s Council Fellows Program branched off for an onsite immersion experience with the MedStar Institute for Innovation (MI2)—a center exploring, building and scaling new ideas designed to shape the future success of MedStar Health. Following an overview of the Institute’s operating framework, approach to innovation and driving goal of improving the care delivery model for both patients and providers, Fellows engaged in demonstrations of voice AI ambient technology in clinical documentation, and AI image generators as potential tools for patient education. MI2 innovators emphasized that as human factor engineers, the human component is always central to their focus, and acknowledged the critical importance of generating the right guardrails and regulatory framework to identify and mitigate patient safety risks associated with AI.

Fellows then sat in on a stirring fireside chat between Michael Burcham and Dr. Reed Tuckson regarding the pandemic-born Coalition for Trust in Health & Science, our position on the brink of the Industry 4.0 era and the charge to those working in healthcare to help revive a sense of community and shared purpose around the value of human life. To close out their D.C. Delegation experience, cohort participants heard a presentation from ’23 Fellows Program alum Caleb Gallifant, VP of Integrated Health at Humana, on three pivotal questions lying at the heart of consumer-centric design.
