Dr. Reed Tuckson, former executive vice president and chief of medical affairs at UnitedHealth Group, served as moderator for the panel that featured perspectives on provider and payer dynamics, along with trends in employer and consumer engagement. Panelists included Charles N. (“Chip”) Kahn, III, president and CEO, Federation of American Hospitals; Jim Srite, senior vice president and chief actuary, BlueCross Blue Shield of Tennessee; Michael Taylor, senior vice president of health and benefits, Aon Hewitt Consulting; and Dr. Michael Weiner, director of health care strategic services, IBM.
“The discussion offered us an insider’s perspective on changes unfolding in our care delivery and payment systems and how patients as consumers are responding.” said Tuckson. “As a center for health care management and expertise, Nashville will influence these trends nationwide.”

“We’re seeing new relationships developing between many clinicians and providers. There is a real effort to provide better access to care as well as to do a better job of taking care of patients across the care continuum,” said Kahn.
As one of Tennessee’s largest insurors, Srite commented on the benefit of increased engagement with enrollees. “With services like in-person assistance at our new consumer center in Nashville and our traveling mobile unit, BlueCross is finding new ways to engage and to better communicate with our enrollees on how they can be proactive in their health care.”
“There is a great deal of energy now in the private exchange space. These tools offer employers ways to customize offerings that fit their needs and work better for their employees,” said Taylor.
“Trends in data availability will have a tremendous influence on quality and cost of care. Employers now have access to more and better information about current and retired employees. This will guide care and ultimately improve business decision-making,” said Weiner.
