Fellows delve into innovations in care during two-day immersion
Council Fellows reconvened in Nashville last week for two days of experiential learning on the topic of Healthcare Innovation.
On day one, Fellows participated in an onsite immersion at Meharry Medical College, meeting first with the School of Medicine’s dean to discuss the mounting crisis in physician workforce recruitment—and, more notably, subsequent implications for medical education. Cohort small groups then completed four patient care simulations in Meharry’s medical simulation and clinical skills center, assuming clinical provider roles to navigate scenarios ranging from acute trauma response to delivery of difficult news to a patient.
On day two, Council Fellows heard candid thoughts and personal stories from four speakers with backgrounds and expertise ranging from small healthcare startups to the federally funded Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. Topics included best practices for innovation in healthcare, critical lessons learned both from success and failures, the value of diversity within teams and the importance of aligning one’s business model to support your core mission. Fellows also heard an overview of five goals currently driving efforts at the CMS Innovation Center.
Our program resumes on Friday, April 5, in a virtual conversation on Segmenting Market.
