Council Fellows engage in conversations around health equity
Our 11th cohort of Fellows returned to Nashville last week for two days of discussion, reflection and experiential learning on the topic of health equity.
Council Fellows heard presentations from speakers representing The California Endowment, the Tennessee Department of Health and CareBridge—each designed to prompt new understandings around U.S. health disparities, inequities and zip codes as a more powerful determinant of health outcomes than genetic codes. Topics included the importance of rebuilding the American social contract, building power among those most impacted by inequity, housing as a leading social determinant of health, intersectionality and the compounding challenges to care access encountered by those with disabilities.
Fellows also had the opportunity to tour facilities and engage the executive team at Faith Family Medical Center, a non-profit primary care clinic serving uninsured/under-insured individuals in 31 of middle Tennessee’s 33 counties. Following the conversation, the four cohort small groups leveraged their professional expertise and insights to problem solve real strategic challenges posed by the FFMC team.
The 2024 Fellows program reconvenes March 8 in a 4-hour virtual session on Health Policy.
